“Christmas magic is silent. You don’t hear it - you feel it, you know it, you believe it.”

- Kevin Allan Milne

The Party:

Who: A mini family Christmas party for your kiddos!

What: Write letters to santa, decorate the envelopes, make reindeer food, and watch for Santa in the sky! This party is all about the magic of believing in Santa.

Where: A playroom on an activity table or a dining room table.

When: Any early evening, the party takes about an hour, try to aim for dusk.

Design Notes:

When I was little, one of my favorite parts about Christmas time was watching for Santa. I would watch the night sky all month long, looking out for him test driving his sleigh. To this day, I swear I saw him a couple of times.

The magic of believing is a tradition I wanted to start with my own kids, so I packaged it up into a little mini party for my son this year. I recreated all of my favorite things like writing letters to santa and added a few new ideas like making Reindeer food.

The great thing about this mini party is that you can shop your own house for decor before purchasing anything. The beauty of doing this is that the party naturally becomes your unique style without much effort or thought. As long as you choose things that all have a similar color palette, the decor will come together beautifully.

The entire concept for this mini party was designed around my “Believe” sign that I picked up at Michaels Craft store a few years ago. It is one of my favorite Christmas decorations and usually hangs in my living room. I borrowed the sign for this party, and started shopping my own home for more decor that had similar colors of red, white, and turquoise blue.

Thinking outside of the box is key for keeping costs low. All of the decor seen here were things I already possessed. The only items I bought were craft supplies, printables, and reindeer food ingredients. Overall, I spent about $25 on this fun little day!

Once I had my main decor piece and color scheme down, some other things I found around the house included…

  • Blue window pane

  • Red cloth napkins

  • White pennants

  • Lumineer baggies

  • Various colorful ribbon

  • A red scarf

  • Butcher paper to cover the craft table

  • Mini tin candle holders for craft supplies

  • A snowflake burlap runner

  • Clear plastic plates

  • Red cocktail napkins

  • Hot chocolate cups

  • Red and white straws

Activities:

I used a “Letters to Santa” printable by @hudsongreyevents for writing our letters. It was so fun to see what my son wanted to tell Santa. We also decorated the outside of the envelopes with various holiday craft supplies from Michaels Craft Store.

A new activity that I incorporated this year was making Reindeer Food. This was so much fun and I know it will become a yearly tradition now. I used printables from @imaginethatdesignco for the recipe. We also ended up making extra reindeer food, putting it in little cellophane baggies, attaching a recipe card and delivering a fun package to our neighbors kids. There is nothing more joyous to me than spreading the magic.

Once we had written our letters and made the reindeer food, we waited for dusk, and went outside to mail our letters and spread the reindeer food. I explained to my son that Santa test drives a lot this month, so if we sprinkled the reindeer food in our yard, it would attract them and he would be able to find our letters. We also watched in the sky for a little bit and saw some really neat things flying over head!

The Little Details:

My favorite little details from this mini party include…

  • “We all know Mrs. Claus is the one who does all the real work” cocktail napkins. This was a detail purely for the moms and makes me chuckle. You can find these napkins by @suburban_soiree here .

  • As a different take on trail mix, I made Santa’s Mix and served them in red cupcake liners.

  • The red scarf draped across the window pane was one of my favorite decor elements. It added a touch of softness and winter warmth to the decor.

  • The star tin cans holding all of the craft supplies were candle holders form 4th of July, but fit in perfectly with this little party.
