How the Changing of Seasons Affects our Mood
Let’s dive into how the changing of seasons affects our mood…
This is going to be one of those blog posts that talks about the bigger picture of things. I have two sides of me – the fun child who loves the frill and fluff of celebrating but also this old soul who loves to find the deeper soul purpose meaning to things.
So, this is definitely a deeper meaning blog post, just a heads up!
If you are searching for something a little lighter, I have tons of other blog posts including this one on a Twins 1st Forest Birthday Party. But let’s go ahead and dive into how the changing of seasons affect our mood AND how to apply that to planning celebrations and gatherings.
Most of you know that my usual topic is anything celebratory and seasons play a major role in that. Different holidays are celebrated during different seasons and gatherings are planned in and around certain seasons as well. For instance, you are likely not going to plan a backyard BBQ pool party in the middle of winter.
I love observing the natural elements surrounding every season. Things like animals, weather, plants, trees, the air, sun and moon. My design aesthetic as an event planner is very natural and rustic – I draw most of my inspiration from nature. But I am not only super interested in the visual aspects of every season. I am also very drawn to how they subconsciously make us feel and how our energy changes to match the seasonal vibe. Yes – I swear this is such a thing, and let me prove it to you really quickly…
Why aren’t you going to plan a pool party in the middle of winter? The most obvious answer is because of the weather. We have learned that it is likely going to be cold and therefore probably not a very enjoyable experience. But even in areas of the country that don’t have super cold winters, the vibe is still the same. During the winter we are drawn to blankets, being cozy, fires, hot beverages, and curling up. I believe this natural reaction comes from our connection to nature. Like most animals in the wintertime, we want to hibernate and stay safe inside.
As we have just entered into a new season of Spring, I thought this blog post would be a really fun one to write. I want to break down some characteristics about the different seasons and how they directly relate to our energy and moods.
Spring
First, we have Spring. Think of spring as the beginning of a new cycle. It’s the season of birth. Everything is coming to life. The weather is changing, it becomes warmer, which is why I like to associate this season with the element of Fire and the feeling of love. We start to notice the sun again in this season.
Spring represents the rising sun. There is so much energy sparking off everywhere around us. Because of all of this, this season brings about big energy within us. This energy can fluctuate between super highs and super lows - just like birth. Some days are absolutely beautiful, and some days are dark and rainy. It’s a very energetic season.
Spring is a super popular time for weddings. I think this is not only because of the ideal weather but also because of the subconcious feeling to “start fresh”. Couples begin their new lives together during this time just as the earth is beginning its new cycle. It’s a beautiful time and a wonderful time to celebrate new relationships, parents, couples, and friendships.
Summer
Next, as we move out of the energetic Spring and transition into Summer, a shift in energy happens. Do you feel a sense of ease and relaxation during the Summer? Maybe not every single day, we are human after all, but there are certainly times during summer where we feel like everything is “all good”, right? This seasons just gives off that vibe.
I believe this is because of the energy surrounding Summer. The plants are grown, the trees are rooted, the animals are out and about just living - there is not too much worry or concern during this season. Everything is alive and green. The sun is hot and high in the sky. The days are long. The waters are warm and ripe for swimming. Lightening bugs fill the sky at dusk. It’s like the earth is saying, “hey, come play with me”.
I definitely associate Summer with the element of Earth. It’s a time of youth. For playing outside and staying up late. It’s a great time to gather for no reason and we often do during Summer. Weekend cookout’s, beach trips, days at the lake. It’s an amazing season filled with a really calm energy. A perfect time to celebrate the joys of everyday simple living with new and old faces.
Fall
Then we have Fall. This season falls on the opposite scale of Spring – another big energetic season just in a different way. While in the Spring new things are growing and coming to life, in the Fall they have grown, are ready for harvest, and are beginning to die. Spring is the rising sun and Fall is the setting sun. Spring is fire and Fall is water.
You can associate Fall with adulthood. We’ve grown up and here we are – ready to full fill our purpose. Fall is such a pretty season, showing all its colors, as the seasonal cycle is coming to an end. It’s a beautiful way to send off nature before winter blows through.
This shifting energy from the calm vibe of Summer to gearing up for Winter is a big shift. That’s why Fall feels so busy, it’s a very active energy. Were all like little squirrels gathering nuts for the Winter. That’s why Fall is a great time to host events that are very active like fundraisers, galas, homecomings, and dances.
Winter
Finally, we have Winter, which has actually become one of my favorite seasons as I have gotten older. Winter is the opposite of Summer and represents denser and darker energy, but not in a bad way. Summer is an outward time and Winter is an inward time. A time to reflect, breath and rest much like the animals who hibernate in the Winter. We are pulled to do the same.
I like to associate Winter with the Air element. When you step outside in the winter time, the first thing that hits your face is that cold crisp air. Sometimes you can even see your breath. We become much more aware of air during the Winter. Snow falls from the sky in Winter. The north, mountains, and high altitudes all resonate during the Winter.
While there is much outward excitement surrounding the holidays, Winter is still a time that we feel connected to home and family. It’s a great season for family or community gatherings.
