This has been a tradition for going on three years now. In this blog post I am going to show you my exact 5 steps for goal setting in the New Year. You have to admit, there is something very special about the wilderness - a sort of mysterious enchantment nestled among the breeze in the trees, especially during the fall. A green and white Southwestern blanket was thrown on top of a bench to bring in a pattern. Then pumpkins in various oranges, greens, and whites were added throughout the display to tie together the color scheme. Some pumpkins were left whole while others were turned into vases with native flowers. Clippings of Cypress trees were dispersed in-between pumpkins for more Forest elements. Fall leaves were also scattered onto the blanket and around the teepees to bring in even more color. This will also help the darker colors like black, brown, and orange deepen in color. Just keep it in air tight containers, at room temperature, with a piece of plastic wrap pressed onto the icing. If you want to try piping icing, pipe a border first, then flood it in. Check that you have the right consistency by running a knife through your bowl of icing, and the icing should blend back together in 15 seconds. It was a walking tour hitting all of the most haunted restaurants, hotels, and houses in Cape May. It was at night and led by a person holding a lantern. The stories were great – not too scary but just spooky enough to give you a little chill. There was something about standing in front of the places where the story was being told that gave a sense of excitement. Would I see a ghost?? This spawned my love of ghost tours and making sure to check out any tour I could during travels. Normal roads and sidewalks, modern businesses and shopping centers, brick ramblers and a few new developments. It wasn’t until I had my first child and started taking walks/drives around my town that I realized there were a few historic houses I had not noticed before, hidden behind new houses or in woods. I would watch the night sky all month long, looking out for him test driving his sleigh. To this day, I swear I saw him a couple of times. The magic of believing is a tradition I wanted to start with my own kids, so I packaged it up into a little mini party for my son this year. It was so fun to see what my son wanted to tell Santa. We also decorated the outside of the envelopes with various holiday craft supplies from Michaels Craft Store. A new activity that I incorporated this year was making Reindeer Food. This was so much fun and I know it will become a yearly tradition now. I used printables from @imaginethatdesignco for the recipe. We also ended up making extra reindeer food, putting it in little cellophane baggies, attaching a recipe card and delivering a fun package to our neighbors kids. There is nothing more joyous to me than spreading the magic. Once we had written our letters and made the reindeer food, we waited for dusk, and went outside to mail our letters and spread the reindeer food. I explained to my son that Santa test drives a lot this month, so if we sprinkled the reindeer food in our yard, it would attract them and he would be able to find our letters. He tricked the devil so many times, he was condemned to walk to earth forever with only a coal to light his way, which he put into a potato made lantern. Thus explaining two relevant traditions – pumpkins and tricks! So, in Ireland and Scotland, people began to make their own lanterns by carving scary faces into turnips or potatoes and putting them in windows or near doors to frighten away “Stingy Jack” and other wondering Spirits. The youth would do silly pranks such as placing farmers’ wagons and livestock on barn roofs, uprooting vegetables in backyard gardens and tipping over outhouses. But eventually the tricks became a little more sinister and included setting fires, breaking glass in the street, throwing flour on people, and even waxing street cars. The pranks were meant as harmless but inadvertently began hurting people and Halloween was almost banned in the states! So during the 1930’s, instead of outlawing the holiday, communities and families began promoting parties, carnivals and costume parades on Halloween to keep kids out of trouble. You can find that set here. Download, print, and cut out anything that needs to be cut. Some prints are full size and don’t need cutting while others are mini such as bottle and straw labels. You also don’t have to use everything in the kit. Print off and use what you want. First I framed two of the larger Movie Night signs in frames that I use to swap out signage all of the time. Next I took some small wooden blocks and taped some of the other signs to them so they would stand up. Last, I made the “Boo” banner with twine and tape! Tip: If you run out of frames (or don’t have any), you can always use your kids blocks, cups/glasses, or even books to help make things stand up. The bags can be used all week to fill with whatever treats are made. I will likely keep the candy out all week but swap out the main snack for different things each night. Some other easy movie night snacks include popcorn, chips, pretzels, trail mix, Chex mix, mixed nuts, caramel apples, and Oreo’s. Or if you are feeling extra fancy, make a themed snack from one of the movies! I also did not use all of the items in the printable kit at once. This will allow me to swap some things out throughout the week. I can swap out some of the signs for different ones or use different bottle labels to keep things interesting. Have fun with the decor and setup! I’ll always add it into the timeline and convince the couples to do it. It’s just one of those moments where everything comes together and I think it’s important for the couple to see and feel that. Most of the day they are running around getting ready, taking pictures, and don’t actually get a moment to step back and go “wow, this is our wedding!” And that’s exactly what a room reveal does. It’s a chance for the couple to soak in what’s really happening. The adult buffet was a simple chili bar, which is one of my absolute favorite stations to make for parties because it is so easy and so good! It was really neat to see the sun slowly set, with each session’s lighting being a little bit different. The sun set’s right behind the tree’s creating an amazing sunset glow through the branches. The lighting back there has always been one of Stephanie’s favorite attributes about the property, hence her inspiration for hosting photo shoots. The White’s had a firepit going to keep folks warm in-between shoots. There’s a section of yard beyond the White’s fence line that has an open field backing to a full wood with tall mature trees. For this shoot, Stephanie designed a simple outdoor living room setup using natural and vintage elements. She wanted the scene to feel festive but also not overly done. A vintage gold couch paired with some pillows, a plaid red blanket, and jute rug gave texture for the set. Stephanie and her husband reconstructed an old wooden wedding arch they had into a tree shape triangle with hanging holly from Steph’s parents holly tree for some height.
