“One with the Forest” 1st Birthday Celebration
“Keep close to nature’s heart and break clear away, once in a while.. ” - John Muir
A Boho-Fall-Forest Cake Smash for these Wild Ones!
The Party:
Who: Willow and Thomas turn 1 on November 29th!
What: Because of COVID and social distancing, we decided to keep things a little low-key this year and focus on a keepsake. A smash cake photoshoot was the perfect idea! This is a great alternative to hosting a big 1st birthday party, especially this year. Put money towards an amazing display and photographer! Memories for a lifetime.
Where: The shoot took place in our backyard and in the woods of West Virginia. Because the celebration was a photoshoot without guests, going to multiple places was an easy option.
When: We did the styled shoot over a convenient weekend before the busy holiday season and planned it around the twins nap schedules! Win-Win!
Design Notes:
Do you remember as a young child imagining all of the magical things that must happen in the forest? You have to admit, there is something very special about the wilderness - a sort of mysterious enchantment nestled among the breeze in the trees, especially during the fall.
This styled shoot was meant to evoke our childhood curiosity- finding a cozy cabin in the woods, pitching a tent around a fire at dusk, and being one with the forest.
Instead of traditional highchairs, two simple small white teepees were set up for each twin with the tall green cypress trees as a backdrop.
“One” tassel banners were custom made by Rusty Chic Decor and strung across the opening of the teepees. Both banners were made just a little differently, one with orange lettering (which you can find here) and one with green lettering (which you can find here) to subtly represent the different genders of each twin.
To pull together the Boho Fall Forest design, a vignette was constructed in between the teepees. A green and white Southwestern blanket was thrown on top of a bench to bring in a pattern. Then pumpkins in various oranges, greens, and whites were added throughout the display to tie together the color scheme. Some pumpkins were left whole while others were turned into vases with native flowers.
Clippings of Cypress trees were dispersed in-between pumpkins for more Forest elements. Fall leaves were also scattered onto the blanket and around the teepees to bring in even more color. Lastly, the Apache Blessing was added as a sentimental finishing touch!
The Little Details:
Steph’s favorite little details from this party include…
The DIY pumpkin vases created from leftover Halloween pumpkins (turned around backwards), with Cypress tree branch clippings and various plants and flowers from the yard. A very budget friendly decor element that made big impact.
The amazing Tree Stump smash cakes for each twin, complete with Meringue mushrooms from Maple Place Bakery.
The Fox and Bear sweaters from Target. Willow was a Fox obviously and Thomas was mama’s bear!
